Optimize SQL Backup/Restore with BUFFERCOUNT

I have noticed a 15% improvement in backup/restore times by setting BUFFERCOUNT=200.  Microsoft had to pick a default value that works in a majority of environments.  200 might not be the right value for your environment but it is definitely worth experimenting values other than the default.  Here is a good article from SQLCat that provides more information on the topic: http://sqlcat.com/technicalnotes/archive/2008/04/21/tuning-the-performance-of-backup-compression-in-sql-server-2008.aspx
